Doomben 10,000

Race Overview

The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 is widely regarded as one of the premier sprint races in Queensland racing.

The Weight-For-Age race is run over 1200m at Doomben in Brisbane as part of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Total prizemoney for the race is $1.5 million.

The inaugural race was called the Doomben Newmarket Handicap and was won by Wallen in 1933.

The race became the Doomben 10,000 in 1946 after the £10,000 prizemoney on offer, which made the race the richest sprint in Australia at the time.

After starting out as a 1200m race, the distance has changed a couple of times to 1400m and 1350m before reverting back to 1200m in 2017.

It was a Principal Race from 1933-1979 before becoming a Group 1 race in 1980.

Legendary trainer TJ Smith holds the record for the greatest number of wins with 6 race wins in 1955, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1982 and 1985.

Jockey George Moore has been the most successful jockey with 5 race wins in 1940, 1953, 1957, 1969 and 1971.

Champion sprinter Takeover Target famously won the Doomben 10,000 in 2007.

Other notable winners include Lough Nough (1934), Bernborough (1946), Black Onyx (1969, 1970), Baguette (1971), Manikato (1979), Chief De Beers (1995, 1998), Falvelon (2001, 2002), Bel Espirit (2003), Apache Cat (2008, 2009), Hot Danish (2010), Sea Siren (2012), Spirit Of Boom (2014), Boban (2015) and Redzel (2017).

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Mazu won the race in 2022.
