Our Favourite Memories Of Might & Power: ‘A Once In A Lifetime Racehorse’

Legendary racehorse Might And Power was aptly named.

The Australian-trained and New Zealand-bred horse died at age 26 following a bout with colic.

As a 4YO, Might And Power won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in 1997 before returning a year later to capture the Cox Plate.

Trained by Jack Denham, Might And Power collected a number of WFA races including the Queen Elizabeth and Doomben Cup and was named the Australia Horse of the Year in 1998.

Tributes have poured in for the champion racehorse with Living Legends describing Might And Power as a “once-in-a-lifetime-horse’’.

We asked a range of acing experts to recoun their favourite Might And Power memory and here is what they said of the legendary racehorse.

Traders’ Desk

“First of all, Might and Power was a champion in his time.

“He didn’t win his races the easy way, he always did it tough usually breaking the hearts of his competitors during the race.

“Our most memorable moment was his win in the 1997 Melbourne Cup where he just held on to beat Doriemus and all the drama that occurred when they hit the line with Greg Hall, Doriemus’ jockey standing high in the irons waving his whip in the air as if to claim the win and the wait for the photo which indicated the champion had stretched his head out to prevail by the barest of margins and therefore claimed the Cups double.

“He will always be remembered for his tenacity and fight – he was a champion.”

Shane Adair (South Australian Racing Expert)

“One of the greats of the Australian Turf and my favourite horse as a teenager growing up in South Australia.

“My highlight is the Caulfield Cup victory.

“You won’t see a bigger demolition of a G1 field and the further they went the further he took off!

“Still breathtaking to watch now!

“A horse that everyone was in awe of in that period.

“His racing style of running his opposition into the ground coupled with Jim Cassidy & Nick Moraitis playing
it up to the big crowds, made his days at the track truly memorable for any racing fan!

“Great memories and enjoy the racetrack in the sky champ.”

Craig Moore (Racing owner)

“My favourite memory is the 1997 Caulfield Cup.

“Might And Power jumped, crossed and traveled beautifully in the race.

“He controlled the field and stacked them up just before the turn and let down.

“My word when he did, the race was instantly put to bed and Melbourne Cup winner Doriemus who finished 2nd was 7 lengths behind.

“Total dominance in the race which was meant to be competitive.”

Trav Noonan (Victorian Racing expert)

“I wasn’t old enough to see Might And Power race in the flesh and remember it.

“In fact he won the Cups double, I wasn’t even 1 years old but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate how good a horse this legend of our sport was.

“Imagine any racehorse now being able to win in a year period, races such as the Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup, Tancred, Queen Elizabeth, Doomben Cup, Caulfield Stakes and Cox Plate.

“You just can’t, it’s video game like stuff what he achieved on the track between 97 and 98.

“Now many deserve legendary status but Might And Power did.

“A once in a lifetime racehorse.”
