Queensland Oaks

Race Overview

The Group 1 Queensland Oaks is a 2400m race for 3YO fillies at set weights and is held at Eagle Farm in Brisbane as part of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

The inaugural winner of the race was Malt Maid in 1951 when the race was run as the Queensland Oaks Stakes after Christmas on December 27.

In 1953, the race moved to November to be part of the Queensland Cup race card before moving to the Brisbane Winter Carnival in 1973.

The Queensland Oaks was a Principal Race from 1951-1979 before becoming a Group 1 race in 1980.

The distance of the race has only altered slightly over the years and was 2200m in 2015 and 2017 and as long as 2432m in 1983.

Held almost exclusively at Eagle Farm throughout its history, the race was run at Doomben in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

A huge incentive for any winner or runner-up is Racing Queensland’s offer of $100,000 in cash or $250,000 QTISx vouchers to any horse that can finish first or second in the Oaks or Derby while also finishing in the top 3 in The Q22.

The most successful jockey has been Chris Munce who has won the race 4 times in 11 attempts between 2000-2010.

Since 1983, prolific-winning trainer Chris Waller and Neville Begg hold the record as the most successful trainers with 3 wins apiece.

Champion mare Winx holds the race record time of 2:14.09 for 2200m while Vouvray (2004) and Arctic Scent (1996) hold the equal record time of 2:27.00 for 2400m.

Along with Winx (2015), other notable winners include Evening Peal (1955), Surround (1977), Ethereal (2001), Mon Mekki (2002) and Vouvray (2004).

The Edward Cummings-trained Duais with Hugh Bowman aboard, won the race in 2021 while Gypsy Goddess won the race from barrier 22 in 2022.
